چکیده

Recent X-ray observations have shown evidence for exceptionally broad and skewed iron Kα emission lines from several accreting black hole systems. The lines are assumed to be due to fluorescence of the accretion disk illuminated by a surrounding corona and require a steep emissivity profile increasing in to the innermost radius. This appears to question both standard accretion disc theory and the zero torque assumption for the inner boundary condition, both of which predict a much less extreme profile. Instead it argues that a torque may be present due to magnetic coupling with matter in the plunging region or even to the spinning black hole itself. Discussion so far has centered on the torque acting on the disc. However the crucial determinant of the iron line profile is the radial variation of the power radiated in the corona. Here we study the effects of different inner boundary conditions on the coronal emissivity and on the profiles of the observable Fe Kα lines. We argue that in the extreme case where a prominent high redshift component of the iron line is detected, requiring a steep emissivity profile in the innermost part and a flatter one outside, energy from the gas plunging into the black hole is being fed directly to the corona.

On the origin of the iron Kα line cores in Active Galactic Nuclei

X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton have shown that there are relatively narrow cores to the iron Kα emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Plausible origins for this core emission include the outer regions of an accretion disk, a pc-scale molecular torus, and the optical broad-line region (BLR). Using data from the literature it is shown that no correlation exists between t...

Evidence for an Untruncated Accretion Disk in the Broad-line Radio Galaxy 4c+74.26

We present evidence for a broad, ionized Fe Kα line in the XMM-Newton spectrum of the broad-line radio galaxy (BLRG) 4C+74.26. This is the first indication that the innermost regions of the accretion flow in BLRGs contain thin, radiatively efficient disks. Analysis of the 35 ks XMM-Newton observation finds a broad line with an inner radius close to the innermost stable circular orbit for a maxi...

Line Emission from an Accretion Disk Around a Black Hole: Effects of Disk Structure

The observed iron Kα fluorescence lines in Seyfert I galaxies provide strong evidence for an accretion disk near a supermassive black hole as a source of the line emission. These lines serve as powerful probes for examining the structure of inner regions of accretion disks. Previous studies of line emission have considered geometrically thin disks only, where the gas moves along geodesics in th...

The Contribution of Particle Impact to the Production of Fe Kα Emission from Accreting Black Holes

The iron Kα line is perhaps the most important spectral diagnostic available in the study of accreting black holes. The line is thought to result from the reprocessing of external X-rays by the surface of the accretion disk. However, as is observed in the solar corona, illumination by energetic particles may also produce line emission. In principle, such a process may be uncorrelated with the o...

Evidence for a Link between Fe Kα Emission Line Strength and Qpo Phase in a Black Hole

In X-ray binaries, the frequencies revealed in X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are often interpreted as characteristic frequencies in the inner accretion disk, though the exact oscillation mechanism is unknown at present. Broadened Fe Kα lines are also excellent diagnostics of the inner accretion flow, if their broadening is indeed due to inner disk reflection. Herein, we present two c...
